Waterfowl hunting on working farmland in Brighton, Colorado

Howard Hunting Club is a private, membership-only waterfowl club spread across farmland, ponds and creek sloughs north-east of Brighton. Members hunt ground that has been farmed and managed by the same family for decades.

What makes it work

Managed ground

The property is a working farm first. Corn, wheat, sorghum, alfalfa and hay are rotated across the fields, and the water and cover are managed with the birds in mind rather than left to chance.

Limited membership

Membership is capped and by invitation. Fewer guns on the property means less pressure on the birds, better hunting through the season, and ground that holds up year to year.

Blinds that rest

Each blind can be hunted twice a week and then rests. It is a simple rule, but it is the difference between a spot that produces all season and one that is burnt out by November.

The property

More than twenty named blinds and shooting positions spread across four tracts, from open water to dry-field layouts. Members choose their spot based on the wind and the weather on the day rather than being assigned one.

  • Big Lake & Thompson Dam — open water with four blinds, plus dry-field layouts in the corn, wheat and sorghum
  • CR 17 & 6 and Kimberly Pond — Corner Pond, three hay fields, a T-post blind and slough access
  • Povich Pond, Sandoval and Yoxall Ditch — three pond blinds, alfalfa and the Big Dry Creek sloughs
  • CR 15 & 168th Avenue — Middle Lake and three hay fields at the north end

Reserving a blind

Members book online through the club's own reservation system. A spot is yours for the whole day, morning and evening, and you can move if the wind changes.

  • Book up to two weeks ahead
  • Up to four hunters in a blind
  • One spot per member per day
  • Cancel any time so the spot returns to the pool

The reservation system is a separate, members-only site.
