About us

A working farm that happens to be very good duck ground

Howard Hunting Club sits on family farmland north-east of Brighton, in Weld County, Colorado. The ground is farmed year-round. The hunting works because of how it is farmed, not in spite of it.

How the club came about

The land has been in the family for generations, running corn, wheat, sorghum, alfalfa and hay across several tracts between County Road 17 and County Road 19. Water collects in the lakes, ponds and the Big Dry Creek sloughs that thread through the property, and birds have always used it.

The club was formed to open a limited number of those spots to people who would treat the place properly — close the gates, respect the crops, and hunt it the way you would hunt your own ground. It is a small club by design, and it is run day to day by the family and a handful of long-standing members rather than by a management company.

How it is run

Three principals look after the club between them — the property and the farming, the membership and the day-to-day, and the books. Decisions get made by people who are on the ground every week, which is why the rules are short and the answers are quick.

The ground comes first

Crops are rotated and water managed with the season in mind. Blinds rest after two hunts in a week. Membership is capped. None of that is complicated, but it is the reason the hunting holds up in January as well as October.

Everyone knows the rules

Members sign an annual agreement and a liability release. Guests sign the same release before they hunt. Every hunter in a party is named on the reservation. No surprises, for anyone.

What membership involves

  • An annual membership agreement and a signed liability release
  • Reservations made through the club's own online system, up to two weeks ahead
  • Two active reservations at a time, one spot per day, up to four hunters in a blind
  • A set number of guest visits included each season, with a modest fee beyond that
  • A half-day of work on the property each season, on the honour system — fixing blinds, clearing access, general upkeep

Membership is limited and by invitation. If you have been pointed here by an existing member, or you farm or hunt nearby and want to ask, get in touch — we will tell you straight whether there is room.
